In the fall months of 1942, Algeria’s Jews had suffered massive discrimination at the hand of the Vichy Regime, the domestic fascist government under German influence. Jews in Algeria had been French citizens since 1870, and as they began to lose their rights beginning in 1940, young and educated Algerian Jews were catalysts in organizing resistance to the Vichy regime. On the eve of the American landing in North Africa on November 8th, 315 Jews participated in the Resistance efforts which succeeded in taking temporary control of Algeria’s capital city, Algiers. In this new documentary film by Rami Kimchi, viewers learn the unknown story of how a dynamic circle of young Jews helped free Algeria from the yoke of the Vichy administration.
