This course will examine four topics, one in each class: 1) Zionism and the rebirth of Israel from Herzl to Ben-Gurion; 2) Israel’s struggles for survival and its emergence as a regional military power; 3) The social, political, and economic changes that have reshaped the country and 4) The “peace process” from the rise of the PLO and Hamas to the Oslo Accords and the present impasse.
