The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus is proud to announce our 2022-2023 concert season, entitled “Rising.” Created and curated by Music Director Emeritus Steven Schick and Chorus Director Arian Khaefi, the season will offer a full slate of imaginative programs, expertly performed by the community of talented musicians in the orchestra and chorus.

Some highlights of the season:
October 29-30, 2022, “Powerful Nature” Ruben Valenzuela, Artistic Director of Bach Collegium San Diego, will be the guest conductor for the opening concert. Featured works will be Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, Chávez’s Piano Concerto (local favorite Kyle Adam Blair as soloist), and Beethoven’s beautiful “Pastoral” Symphony.
December 3-4, 2022, “Passionate Voices” We will present The Chairman Dances by John Adams, after which the orchestra will premiere this year’s Nee Commission work by Sang Song. The chorus will then join the orchestra to present Rossini’s iconic and powerful Stabat Mater. Jeffrey Malecki, Director of Bands at USD, will be the featured guest conductor.
February 11-12, 2023, “Learning to Fly” We welcome Steven Schick back to the podium to conduct a work by Mary Kouyoumdjian, this year’s Brenda and Steven Schick commission honoree. We’ll also feature Stravinsky’s energetic Firebird Suite, Varèse’s Octandre, and UCSD faculty member Susan Narucki performing Strauss's Four Last Songs.
March 18-19, 2023, “Music of the Spheres” We will perform Brahms’s colossal Requiem. Also on this program, we’ll feature the 2021 Nee Commission winner Alex Stephenson's new work and Missy Mazzoli’s “minimalist” gymnopédie for small orchestra,  Music for Orbiting Spheres. Michael Gerdes, Director of Orchestral Studies at SDSU, will conduct the program.
May 6-7, 2023, “Echoes of Color” Sameer Patel, Artistic Director of the San Diego Youth Symphony, will conduct this program. Bookended by two stunning pieces by British composer Anna Clyne, Within Her Arms and her 2020 composition Color Field, it will also include Aaron Copland’s orchestral suite from the ballet
Rodeo and Leon Littlebird’s 2021 Brenda and Steven Schick commission, When Echoes Speak.
June 10-11, 2023, “Sacred and Sublime” Arian Khaefi, Sally & Einar Gall Chorus Director, takes the podium to conduct Nathaniel Dett’s The Chariot Jubilee, a spell-binding oratorio that is “deep-rooted in Spirituals and folklore.” We’ll then present the Young Artists Competition winner from 2021, Ayrton Coehlo Pisco, as soloist in Mendelssohn’s gorgeous Violin Concerto. The program will conclude with Ernst Bloch’s monumental Avodat Hakodesh.
